Jesse Lee Home for Children
Seward, Alaska
About This Haunted Location
Perched on a lonely hill above Seward, Alaska once stood the Jesse Lee Home for Children, an orphanage and boarding school run by the Methodist Women's Home Missionary Society. Built between 1925‑1927, its sprawling Tudor‑revival complex included Jewel Guard Hall and Goode Hall where about 120 children lived, studied and played. Most of the residents were Alaska Native children displaced by epidemics and poverty. In 1927, thirteen‑year‑old Benny Benson, a resident of the home, designed Alaska's state flag on a scrap of paper; the first flag was raised here. The home was a refuge, yet from the start its isolated setting and Tudor architecture gave it a brooding presence. Locals whispered that the building looked like a big haunted house with empty windows and a looming silhouette.
